Worksop on Rietveld Refinement

Professor Habib BOUGHZALA will give a technical training course on Rietveld refinement in solid-state materials using X-ray diffraction on the afternoons of 22 and 23 December 2025. This workshop will typically provide a comprehensive understanding of the Rietveld method, its applications, and practical skills for using adequate free software and databases. Participants will learn how to:
- Analyze powder diffraction data
- Quantify the amorphous part
- Qualitative, semi-quantitative phase analysis and phase identification
- Index X-ray diffraction pattern for unknown phases
- Phase purity analysis
- Refine crystal structures
- Calculate the crystallite size repartition
- Refine the cationic occupation rates
- Perform quantitative phase analysis
The training often includes hands-on sessions with real datasets and addresses challenges like refining structures of Perovskite, Apatite, Cement, Diphosphate, Hybrids, MOFS, Solid Solution, Intermetallic, and many other crystalline materials. Many unbelievable but obvious conclusions will be drawn from these analyses related to the materials studied physical behavior and their crystal structure packing.

Due to lack of time, no theoretical crystallographic training will be provided.

Participants interested in this workshop are invited to send an email to Prof. Habib Boughzala at his email address, containing short Curriculum Vitae.

  • Places limited to 20
  • Participants must bring their own laptop (64 bits working with Win7 or +)
  • A certificate of attendance will be issued to each participant who attends all the workshop sessions and passes the assessment test.

Accomodation & Venue

The Joint conference SCC&JCC2025, will be held at Iberostar Selection Kanataoui Bay Hotel, located in the north east side of Tunisia, in El Kantaoui resort and directly on the shore of the blue sea on a beautiful white sand beach, considered among the most beautiful touristic area of the tunisian coast. Welcoming participants, distribution of documents and check in will start on Sunday 21 December 2025 from 14:00. Check-out will be on Wednesday 24 December 2025 after lunch.
